The Bishop John M. D’Arcy Program in Priestly Renewal is an experience of intellectual and spiritual renewal for diocesan priests across the United States. The program, which is fully funded and underwritten by the McGrath Institute for Church Life with the support of a generous grant from Lilly Endowment Inc., is named after Bishop John M. D’Arcy, who served as the eighth bishop of the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend from 1985 to 2009.

Bishop D’Arcy is remembered for his deep appreciation of the dignity of the ordained priesthood, which he recognized was due to its special configuration to the unique priesthood of Christ as an office of service to the baptismal priesthood. Bishop D’Arcy taught us to give the Church to itself, to teach the Church, in the persons of all who are members of the one Body, to love themselves as members of the Church and to find the gifts of the Spirit working within, below the surface, where it may sometimes seem absent.

The retreat-style conference has historically taken place each summer on Notre Dame’s campus. When COVID halted in-person sessions, the program shifted to an online video format, which we anticipate using for the next two years. The next in-person session is scheduled to take place in 2026.
