Fr. Michael Sweeney, O.P.
A priest of the Western Dominican Province, Fr. Michael was ordained in 1979, after which he ministered both as a university chaplain and as a pastor in a parish setting. In 1997 he co-founded with Sherry Weddell the Catherine of Siena Institute, and remained with the Institute until June, 2004.
From June 2004 through June 2015 Fr. Michael served as President of the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology (DSPT) at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley.
In 2015 Fr. Michael founded the Lay Mission Project, a three-year formation for the laity for the sake of evangelizing families, secular institutions and secular culture. The formation is presently being offered in collaboration with the Diocese of Sacramento.
Fr. Michael has developed and offered workshops in priestly formation, the theology of the laity, the theology of vocation, the Church’s social teaching and the theology of pastoral governance.
