Descripción
La Biblia revela el deseo de Dios de traer la salvación a la humanidad a través de su hijo, Jesucristo. En preparación para esto, Dios optó por revelarse como el Dios vivo y verdadero al pueblo de Israel. Poco a poco y por medio de diferentes alianzas, Dios reveló su promesa de redimir a la humanidad. A Israel, al ser privilegiado como el pueblo escogido, se le reveló la voluntad de Dios por medio de los sacerdotes, profetas, y reyes.
Al manifestar Dios su intención de salvación universal, los autores inspirados del Antiguo Testamento escribieron e interpretaron el mensaje divino. En los libros del Antiguo Testamento encontramos la palabra viva de Dios, y sin un conocimiento de los eventos del Antiguo Testamento, no podemos comprender verdaderamente la historia de la salvación. Los cristianos sólo pueden tener el significado de la vida, muerte y glorificación de Jesús con la ayuda del Antiguo Testamento. San Agustín expresó la creencia en la unidad de toda la Biblia al decir: “El Nuevo Testamento está escondido en el Antiguo, y el Antiguo se aclara en el Nuevo.”
Los participantes en este curso estudiarán el mensaje de salvación en los libros del Antiguo Testamento. Al ser expuestos a la palabra de Dios, fortalecerán su vida espiritual.

Requisitos del Curso

- Asignación semanal por escrito (entre 150 y 200 palabras)
- Sesión semanal en Zoom con el o la facilitadora y otros estudiantes

J. Laura Manzo, PhD
La Dra. Manzo es profesora asociada de escritura en el Seminario de Santa María en Houston. Su investigación se concentra en la lectura sapiencial, especialmente en el libro del Eclesiástico. De su autoría son: “Searching for God’s Wisdom in our daily lives” en The Pastoral Review (May/June 2016), 45-49; “You Will Know that I am the Lord of Life: 1 Kings 17-18” en The Bible Today (July/August 2015); y “Feeding the Poor in Isaiah 58:1-9a: A Call to Justice, Mercy and True Worship” en By Bread Alone: Approaching the Bible Through a Hermeneutic of Hunger (Fortress Press, 2014). Actualmente está escribiendo un artículo sobre Eclesiástico para el Nuevo Comentario Bíblico “San Jerónimo.” La Dra. Manzo se ha dirigido a audiencias académicas a nivel nacional y pastorales en la iglesia local.

Course Description
The Bible reveals God’s desire to bring salvation to humanity through his son, Jesus Christ. To prepare for this, God chose to reveal Himself as the living and true God to the People of Israel. Little by little and through different covenants, God revealed his promise to redeem humanity. Privileged as the chosen people, Israel received the revealed will of God through priests, prophets and kings.
As God manifested his intention of universal salvation, the inspired authors of the Old Testament wrote and interpreted the divine message. In the books of the Old Testament we find the living word of God, and without knowledge of the events of the Old Testament, we cannot truly understand the history of salvation. Christians can only understand the meaning of the life, death, and glorification of Jesus with the help of the Old Testament. St. Augustine expressed belief in the unity of the whole Bible thus: “The New Testament lies hidden in the Old, and the Old is unveiled in the New.”
Participants in this course will explore the message of salvation through the books of the Old Testament and strengthen their spiritual life through studying the word of God.

J. Laura Manzo, PhD
Dr. Laura Manzo is an Associate Professor of Scripture at St. Mary’s Seminary in Houston. Her area of study lies in the Book of Sirach and the Wisdom literature. She is the author of: “Searching for God’s Wisdom in our daily lives” in The Pastoral Review (May/June 2016), 45-49; “You Will Know that I am the Lord of Life: 1 Kings 17-18” in The Bible Today (July/August 2015); and “Feeding the Poor in Isaiah 58:1-9a: A Call to Justice, Mercy and True Worship” in By Bread Alone: Approaching the Bible Through a Hermeneutic of Hunger (Fortress Press, 2014). She currently working on an article on Ben Sira for the New Jerome Biblical Commentary. Additionally, she has made academic presentations nationally and serves the pastoral needs of the local Church.
